Obviously, a historically significant piece that merits further research. The initials JNH are carved into the lid. It was obviously a treasured family heirloom as someone went through a lot of trouble to make a custom fitted case for it that is beautifully constructed out of what looks to be walnut. This was a family with a long military tradition. While I do not have the documentation for it, I believe that this piece was carried during the Civil War era due to the estate that it came from. Also has the rounded guard that I am told is unique to military models. Everything about this piece is excellent. Now, nearly 170 years later, this antique revolver still has much to offer as a collectible, a conversation piece, and a small piece of American history. Lefaucheux revolvers were used by both the Union and Confederate military during the Civil War. The Lefaucheux revolver was the among the first cartridge revolvers designed and patented (long before Colt's ball and powder became cartridge loading), and was first designed in the 1850's. I'm not sure if it is Belgian or French (see proof marks) but the engraving on the barrel reads Francis Marquis, Paris (sorry, but it didn't photograph well). This is probably the finest example of this rare revolver that I've ever encountered.
